PUWMA Training Courses

PUWMA Course Classroom

Mariteq Solutions Ltd. began the roll out of training courses for Sonar Operators in Q4 of 2022. While the course covers all aspects of Sonar, it does delve deeper into Sidescan Operations and more importantly, how to achieve the best imagery using the PUWMA sonar system.

The course continues to be developed based on the feedback of students and its current format seems to work quite well. The current format is as follows but can be adapted to suit your team:

Week before onsite training -we carry out a 2.5 Hour Introduction to Sonar Theory Online. This familiarises students with Sonar Technology as well as some of the terminology used with this type of technology. We also look at Search Patterns and techniques. To confirm all learning outcomes have been met, we use the Kahoot platform to run a quiz like assessment which always becomes very competitive.

Weekend Practical Session Day One – This begins with a recap of everything covered during the Online module and then we get hands on in the classroom in relation to the operating of the PUWMA Sonar System. Once teams are familiar with the unit and all its functions we give them search scenarios and get on the water. The teams will deploy the sonar systems and will become familiar with the controls under the watchful eye of our instructors. Targets to be discovered range from Car parts to life size mannequins and give teams a comprehensive understanding of what these targets look like from a sonar perspective.

Weekend Practical Session Day Two – Day two begins in the classroom with teams extracting the raw data gathered the day before for viewing on some of the supplied software packages which give teams an enhanced ability to view, edit and mark points of interest on the software packages while in the warmth of a classroom or office. Points of Interest can be sent to the PUWMA system so that teams can go back and carry out further investigations where required. Teams are then given new search scenarios but unlike day one, they are solely responsible for running the whole operation (obviously under the watchful eye of our instructors). On completion of day two on the water, we return to the classroom for a thorough debrief and feedback session.
